"Aum had at last discovered the Great Satan, the cabal of evil behind the coming apocalypse. Not surprisingly, it sounded much like the conspirational nonsense of a thousand other fringe groups.
The cult journal attacking the Emperor and others actually comprised a book-length treatise entitled manual of fear. The contents were a frightening if predictable mix about Jews and Freemasons running the world, bent on destroying Japan with Hollywood movies, rock music, junk food-and world war. Inside, Aum issued a "declaration of war" on that slippery but menacing target, "the world shadow government."
Behind it all lurked the Jewish people. For nearly 100 pages, Aum writers recited a tired litany of anti-Semitic text, quoting at length from The Protocols of Zion and similar racist tracts. The Talmud, Aum related, was in fact a murderous work. Jews were responsible for mass murder in Cambodia, Bosnia, and Rwanda, and meant to kill of 3 billion people by the year 2000.
Most Japanese, of course, have never met a Jew; that has not stopped them from buying shelves of best-selling anti-Semitic books on how Jews run the world and secretly subvert Japan. Such crackpot notions were a natural draw for the Aum gullible, who added Jews to the top of a long list of demons to exorcise. Bit it wasn't the Jews alone who troubled Aum-it was "Jewish Japanese." As scholar David Goodman points out in his paper on Aum and anti-Semitism, this apparently meant anyone tainted by the world outside Japan, including Japanese political and religious leaders. Even rival groups like the Moonies' Unification Church and the Buddhist Goka Gakkai were viewed as "Jewish" sects by the cult. "The objects of anti-Semitism in Japan has always been the Japanese, Not Jews," wrote Goodman."
Aum was merely part of a long reactionary tradition of xenophobia in Japan. It was Aum Supreme Truth as the Black Dragon Society, the ultra nationalist savior of a Japan gone to ruin. Asahara, admirer of Adolph Hitler and military might, would have felt at home among the war criminals of the 1930s and 1940s. Even the literature now r4e4sembled that of wartime Japan.

Very few of them observed the commandments of the Torah. Some of them positively hated religion, which they thought had failed the Jewish people by encouraging them to sit back passively and wait for the Messiah. Instead of helping them to struggle against persecution and oppression, religion had inspired Jews to retire from the world in strange mystical exercises or the study of arcane texts. The spectacle of Jews weeping and clinging to the stones of the Western Wall in Jerusalem, the last relic of the ancient Temple, filled many Zionists with dismay. This apparently craven dependence upon the supernatural was the obverse of everything that they were trying to achieve. The Zionists wanted to create a fresh Jewish identity, a New Jew, liberated from the unhealthy, confining life of the ghetto. The New Jew would be autonomous, the controller of his own destiny in his own land. But this quest for roots and self-respect amounted to a declaration of independence from Jewish religion."

We are working together for a reformed and revived Near East, and our two movements complete one another. The Jewish movement is national and not imperialist. Our movement is national and not imperialist, and there is room in Syria for us both. Indeed I think that neither can be a real success without the other.
People less informed and less responsible than our leaders and yours, ignoring the need for cooperation of the Arabs and Zionists have been trying to exploit the local difficulties that must necessarily arise in Palestine in the early stages of our movements. Some of them have, I am afraid, misrepresented your aims to the Arab peasantry, and our aims to the Jewish peasantry, with the result that interested parties have been able to make capital out of what they call our differences.

"Monk returned to London and Ruskin paid his expenses to Palestine, whence, on arrival, he was deported as a nuisance in 1864. Destitute, he signed as seaman aboard a Boston-bound clipper and, being wrecked, swam the last part of the Atlantic. He was cast ashore bleeding and almost naked, so that, looking like a bear, he was shot as one, in semi-darkness, by a farmer. He lost his memory and mind and in this condition at last came home. He recovered after some years and at once returned to his obsession. The ‘day of trouble’, so long foretold, still had not come; the planet kept its accustomed place. He re-examined prophecy and decided that he had erred in recommending the union of Jews and Christians in the world-state to be set up in Jerusalem. Now he saw that what prophecy required God to do was first to put the Jews in possession of Palestine, and then to set up a worldwide organization with power to enforce the submission of nations to its law.
After a lifetime Monk thus stumbled on the fullness of the political plan of world dominion which is contained in the Old Testament, and still thought that he was interpreting divine prophecy. No evidence offers that he ever came in contact with the initiates and illuminates of the grand design. The only recorded Jewish money he was never offered was charitable gift of five pounds "if you are personally in want". He moved always in the company and at the cost of the bemused Gentile "Liberals".
He was forgotten in the Ottawa Valley when, in 1870 his hope (one must use the word) that "the day of troubles" was at last at hand was revived by a huge forest fire, which he took as a sign from heaven that the time had come. Somehow he made his way to London (1872) and to Hunt and Ruskin, who had thought him dead. Ruskin was wooing Rose La Touche, so that for the time he was unresponsive to warning of doom and wrote to the Prophet, "I acknowledge the wonderfulness of much that you tell me, but I simply do not believe that you can understand so much about God when you understand so little about man….you appear to me to be mad, but for aught I know I may be mad myself" (these last words, unhappily, were prescient).
Such admonitions were not new to the Prophet. His relatives and friends had ever implored him, if he felt called to improve mankind, to look around him at home: the lot of the Canadian Indians, or even of the Canadians, might be bettered. To a man who held the key to divine revelation advice of this kind was sacrilegious, and Monk, by way of various pamphlets, came at length to the idea of a "Palestine Restoration Fund". For this he borrowed a notion of Ruskin’s , originally devised to help Ruskin’s own country;’ namely, that wealthy folk should forfeit a tithe of their incomes for the purpose of reclaiming English wastelands. Monk decided that the tithe should serve a better object: the "return!"
By this time (1875) Ruskin was once more unnerved, first by the death of Rose La Touche and the next by the apparent imminence of one more distant war (this time a British-Russian one). Clearly the Prophet was right after all; the "day of troubles" was come. Ruskin signed Monk’s manifesto and dedicated a tenth of his income to the Prophet’s fund for the purchase of Palestine from the Sultan while the English wastelands stayed unreclaimed. When this was achieved, a congress of all nations was to set up a federation of the world in Jerusalem.
The Prophet, thus propped on his feet again, was further helped by Laurence Oliphant, a lion of the Victorian drawing rooms whom he had by chance met when he made his way about America, hobo-fashion. Oliphant was man of different type, a bold, cynical venturer, or adventurer. The idea of buying Palestine appealed to him, but he had no illusions about it. He wrote to Monk, "Any amount of money can be raised upon it, owing to the belief which people have that they would be fulfilling prophecy and bringing on the end of the world. I don’t know why they are so anxious for the latter event, but it makes the commercial speculation easy" Oliphant, as will be seen, did not trouble to hide his disdain for the Prophets message.

This is what Dennis Rohan tried to do. An Australian staying on a kibbutz and associated with a fundamentalist church in America, he set fire to the Al Aqsa mosque. The silver-domed building was badly damaged, and the Muslim world went alight with anger and high rhetoric including calls for jihad, or holy war. Israel, not wishing to fuel the religious aspect of the political and national dispute with the Arabs, moved quickly. Rohan was arrested, charged, found guilty, and imprisoned. But the authorities also declared the Australian insane, a verdict that conspiracy theorists in the Muslim world had trouble swallowing.
Christian extremists, who persist in wishing that the Temple Mount mosques could be flattened, find unlikely allies among Jewish extremists, mainly settlers in the West Bank. But even for right-wing Israeli governments, the idea is repugnant as well as political dynamite. Israeli authorities have done what they can to keep the extremists in check, and in May 1984 they arrested a group of Jewish terrorists who planned-among other things-to blow up the mosques……"
Israel’s entire Christian connection, not just its extremist aspect, bothers many Israelis as well as many American Jews.

"I first went to Jerusalem in 1979 to research a book dealing with Christians, Muslims and Jews. While there I met many third-generation Americans, such as Bobby and Linda Brown of Brooklyn who together with 25 other couples-half of them from the United States-moved onto land of the Palestinians and took the land at gunpoint. They staked off 750 acres and put a strong iron fence around it. Israeli soldiers guard this settlement night and day. That is illegal under every international law.
One evening, we sat under the stars looking at the flickering lights of Palestinian villages. Bobby Brown , with a wave of his arm, said "All the Palestinians have to leave this land. God gave this land to us, the Jews." This incident made a deep impression on me. I knew Bobby Brown could not use an Uzi-and confiscate land at gunpoint in Brooklyn. What made it all right for him to use a gun to take land from Palestinians? And moreover, why did we as Americans taxpayers give Israel the money to pay for the weapons-to confiscate Palestinian land? Had God deeded the land to Bobby Brown? Had the Palestinians been living there for 2,000 years, just holding it until Bobby Brown could claim it? I had to ask myself: Did I believe God had a Chosen Land and a Chosen People?
I returned home, and the questions remained. To research these questions, and how I and others felt about them, I signed to go on a conducted tour of the Holy Land with Jerry Falwell. On arrival in Jerusalem , our group went to the Old City and we approached the large Muslim grounds where the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa Mosque are located. "There", said our Israeli guide, pointing to the mosque, "we will build our third temple."
As we left the site, I remarked to Clyde, a retired Minneapolis business executive, that the guide said a temple would be built there. But, I asked, what about the mosque? It is one of the three most sacred shrines in all of Islam-and holy to a billion Muslims around the world. "Oh," said Clyde, "The mosque will be destroyed. One way or another, it has to be removed. You know it’s in the bible that the temple must be built. And there’ no other place for it." Clyde was convinced that Jews, aided by Christians, should destroy the mosque, build a temple and reinstate the killing of animals in the temple-all in order to please God.
Many Christians throughout this land feel the same as Clyde. They organized a Temple Mount Foundation to raise money to help Jewish terrorists destroy the Muslim mosque. I talked with several, including Terry Reisenhoover of Oklahoma and the Reverend James de Loach of Houston’s Second Baptist church.
The Rev. DeLoach visited in my apartment in Washington, and was proud to tell me had raised and spent tens of thousands of dollars to defend Jewish terrorists charged with assaults on the mosque. He was also pleased to relate that he had entertained in his Houston home Jewish yeshiva students who were studying how to slaughter animals, to be used as sacrifice inside the temple they hope to build.
The Christians who want the mosque destroyed-and a Jewish temple built-follow a belief system called dispensationlism. In all of the world, in all of history, they place Israel on center stage. They contend that we must all go through seven time periods. The countdown on history began , they tell us, in 1948-with the gathering of Jews into Palestine and the creation of the modern state of Israel. The dispensationalists believe in a God not of love, but of war: they believe in what is termed Armageddon theology.
Our group also traveled to Megiddo, located about an hour’s drive north of Tel Aviv.
As we left the bus, I walked alongside Clyde, the retired business executive. As we looked out over the valley, Clyde exclaimed, "At last! I am viewing the site of Armageddon." We continued to gaze at fields-that in size would be lost in any Texas ranch-and Clyde talked of a 200-million-man army that would invade Israel-"right here," he said, and that a great decisive battle would ensue that would involve all the armies of the earth, and that this battle, involving nuclear weapons, would kill most of the inhabitants of this earth. I remarked that for such a big battle-the valley looked very small. "Oh, no!" Clyde says. "You can get a lot of tanks in there!" Clyde’s eyes were shining. "When this battle begins, we-who are Born Again-will be lifted up, raptured-" He assured me has was not worried about the destruction of the earth, because he would not be here. But Up There. Watching. With his escape hatch, he seemed actually to look forward to the destruction of Planet Earth.
A couple of years passed, and I received a colored brochure of a Falwell-sponsored trip. Like the first brochure, it was printed in Israel. In this brochure, Falwell did not once mention that we would be traveling to the Land of Christ. Nor, for that matter, did he once mention the name of Christ. Once we arrived, we had no Christian guide-to any site where Christ was born, died or had his ministry. There was not a single planned visit to a Christian church-or a plan to meet any of the Christians living there, whose forebears have lived in Palestine since the days of Christ.
We had only Israeli guides, and the focus clearly was on military aspects. The Israeli guides gave us endless explanation of why the Israelis should keep all the land of historic Palestine, leaving nothing for the Palestinians.
Once we were on a bus tour, and I thought surely we would stop in Nazareth. "No", said the Israeli guide. The bus would not stop in Nazareth. No one contested the guide’s decision. On the outskirts of Nazareth, however, our Israeli guide changed his mind. "We will stop in Nazareth for 20 minutes," he announced- " to use the toilet facilities." And thus we stopped,. We left Nazareth without having seen it.
We proceeded to Jerusalem, where Falwell chose to honor Ariel Sharon, the burly general who masterminded the invasion of Lebanon, which injured and killed 200,000 Palestinians and Lebanese, most of them civilians. In introducing Sharon, Falwell said that in the annals of history, only a few great men came along. He named George Washington, Abraham Lincoln-and Ariel Sharon!
On another night, Falwell gave a big banquet-to honor the defense minister, Moshe Arens. Before introducing the defense minister, Falwell, in an aside to Arens, said "Mr. Minister, I want to thank you for that jet airplane you gave me."
Falwell-and other dispensationalists-have a working alliance with militant Jewish Zionists. My latest book, Prophecy and Politics , deals with this marriage of convenience between militant Christians and militant Jewish Zionists. Each group uses the other, gains from the other. Christian Zionists, or dispensationalists, give Israel total support because they think there has to be an Israel there in place, not for the Jews, but for the battle of Armageddon, which they actually believe must occur. It’s part of the required steps, they believe, that will lead to their Rapture and the Second Coming of Christ. Because of their scenario, they make a cult of the land of Israel……"

In January 1999, he told 1,500 people at a pastors' conference in Tennessee that the Antichrist was probably alive today and "must be male and Jewish." Justifiably, Jewish leaders accused Falwell of inciting anti-Semitism: The comment was an invitation to regard Jews as tied to demonic forces. When I asked Falwell about the remark, he insisted that "there is not an anti-Semitic bone in my body. I doubt the Jewish people and the State of Israel have a better friend outside their own community than Jerry Falwel." His point, he said, was that he expected the Second Coming soon; it would be preceded by the arrival of the Anti-Christ-who would have to be Jewish to convince people he was the real savior. Falwell was sincere in insisting he loves Israel. But that love, like the Antichrist comment, derives from expectations that Jews will fulfill their role in the premillennialist version of Christian myth."

And there was another factor: The evidence of it could be found just meters about the tunnel itself, in Islamic bookstores near the gates of the Haram. There was Egyptian writers Sa'id Ayyub's Al-Masih al-Daijjal-that is, The Antichrist- which expands radically on the old Islamic idea that at history's finale a Jewish Antichrist will rule until Jesus, as Muslim prophet, returns to defeat him. The cover shows a hook-nosed man wearing a Star of David on his neck, an army coat with a U.S. flag and a hammer and sickle on the shoulders, and missiles on his back. Published in 1987, Al-Masih al -Daijjal spawned an entire genre of Islamic books on the End. They shared fascination with Al-Aqsa and certainty of Jewish plots focused on the mosque. In the same bookstores one could buy a 1991 book by Muhammad Isa Da'ud, warning that the Antichrist's forces were kidnapping children to raise underground as soldiers in a gigantic army. "Where?", writes Da'ud, and answers, "Under Al-Aqsa Mosque and nearby," if you'd read Ayyub, Da'ud or others like them, news of a tunnel near Al-Aqsa could sound like prophecy fulfilled, and a call to the final battle."

Do not spare him, but slay man and woman, child and babe, ox and sheep, camel and ass" (1 Sam. 15:2-3) Saul carried out the order without hesitation sparing only-for later demonstrative execution and ritual sacrifice in the Israelite shrine city of Gilgal-Agag, king of Amalek, and the prize livestock of the slaughtered tribe. The Lord, however, was indignant that anything Amalekite had been left breathing. he wanted his vengeance enacted exactly as ordered. The Protestant broadcaster Pat Robertson suggested Thursday that Ariel Sharon's stroke was divine punishment for "dividing God's land."
"God considers this land to be his," Mr. Robertson said on "The 700 Club", his television program. "You read the Bible and he says, 'This is my land,' and for any prime minister of Israel who decides he is going to carve it up and give it away, God says, 'No, this is mine.'"
Mr. Robertson said he had prayed about a year ago with Mr. Sharon, whom he called "a very tenderhearted man and a good friend." He said he was sad to see Mr. Sharon in his current medical condition.
But he also said that in the Bible, the prophet Joel "makes it very clear that God has enmity against those who 'divide my land.'"
Mr. Sharon "was dividing God's land, and I would say woe unto any prime minister of Israel who takes a similar course to appease" the European Union, the United Nations or the United States, Mr. Robertson said."

Mind you, however, we liquidated Abu Ali Mustafa using one of your helicopters while he sat in his office, and we even managed to keep the frame of his office window in tact. Your overkill, to my great dismay, is targeting innocent people. In short, George, leave Afghanistan immediately and don't go back there. The war is upsetting our shaky coalition between the Likud and the Labor parties.
But lately, it seems to me that, you are also messing up our relations with the Muslim world. Up until now, the Muslim world has accepted, perhaps out of force of habit, our surgical operations. But with this "blitz" that you are conducting in Afghanistan , we worry that you have gone too far. Your country has become a burden to us, as opposed to an asset. Suddenly, protesters in countries that before had never heard of us, like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, and Indonesia are burning Israeli flags in the street. The world is punishing us for our support of you. And worst of all, you have started to disrupt our own activities. Not only haven't you succeeded in taking out Al Qaeda, you are also interfering in our own liquidation of terrorists, who tomorrow could become your terrorists as well. You might not know this yet-but any terrorist killed in the West Bank or in the Gaza Strip today, will not be making it to Manhattan tomorrow."
